Path of Lucas: The Journey He Endured (2017) is a Canadian autobiographical novel by Susanne Bellefeuille, a graduate of Social Work and a strong advocate for people with intellectual disabilities. The story is a fictionalised account of her own family experiences, including teenage pregnancy, depression, mental health struggles, poverty, and the sacrifices made by her father Lucas during his wife Isabelle’s illness. It is studied in SSCE Nigerian schools as a text on resilience, family trauma, self-discovery, and the power of human connection.
The novel follows Lucas, a young man born in the mid-20th century in Canada. Growing up in a family marked by poverty, violence, and loss, Lucas faces homelessness, betrayal, heartbreak, job loss, and eviction. His path is marked by depression, teenage pregnancy in the family, his mother Isabelle’s struggle with mental illness, and the air crash death of his friend Steve. Despite these hardships, Lucas embarks on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. He reconciles with his strained family relationships, finds strength through friendships and meaningful connections, and ultimately learns perseverance, compassion, and resilience. The title symbolises the long and difficult path he endures, with the “path” representing life’s journey and personal growth.
