Antony and Cleopatra

By William Shakespeare
African Poetry / Elizabethan Drama (Set partly in North Africa)

Summary

Overview

Antony and Cleopatra is one of William Shakespeare's great Roman tragedies, deeply rooted in historical geopolitics, spanning the Roman Empire and Ptolemaic Egypt. It explores the passionate, destructive, and politically dangerous love affair between Mark Antony, one of the triumvirs of Rome, and Cleopatra, the exotic Queen of Egypt.

Plot Summary

Following the assassination of Julius Caesar, the Roman Empire is jointly ruled by Mark Antony, Octavius Caesar, and Lepidus. Antony neglects his political and military duties in Rome because he is infatuated with Cleopatra in Alexandria. Pulled back to Rome by political necessity and the death of his wife, Fulvia, Antony forms a temporary political alliance with Octavius Caesar by marrying Caesar's sister, Octavia. However, Antony soon breaks his vows, returns to Egypt, and openly crowns Cleopatra and their children. Outraged, Octavius Caesar wages war against them. The conflict culminates in the naval Battle of Actium, where Cleopatra's flight causes Antony's fleet to scatter and collapse. Misled by false reports of Cleopatra's death, Antony falls on his sword in despair. Upon discovering his body, a grief-stricken Cleopatra chooses suicide by the venomous bite of an asp rather than being paraded as a captive in Caesar's triumphal march through Rome.
