BREAKING: ASUU GIVES SOKOTO GOVERNMENT TWO-WEEK ULTIMATUM, THREATENS STRIKE

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sokoto State University (SSU) chapter, has given the Sokoto State Government a two-week ultimatum to address outstanding agreements and financial obligations owed to its members.

The union warned that failure by the government to fulfil its commitments within the stipulated period could lead to industrial action capable of disrupting academic activities at the university.

Why ASUU Issued the Ultimatum

The decision followed a meeting between the union and the state government's Ministry for Higher Education on September 7, 2026.

According to ASUU-SSU, the government agreed that the union's demands would be addressed within two weeks. However, the union expressed concern because previous agreements had not been fully implemented.

What Are the Outstanding Demands?

The union identified several outstanding issues, including:

• Full implementation of the salary component of the ASUU/FGN Agreement 2025
• Payment of outstanding Earned Academic Allowance (EAA)
• Remittance of outstanding third-party deductions
• Payment of arrears arising from the 25–35% salary increment
• Payment of accumulated promotion arrears

ASUU acknowledged that the government had partially implemented the salary component of the agreement, describing Sokoto State University as the first state university in the North-West to partially implement that component. However, the union said several other obligations remained outstanding.

Strike Threat

ASUU-SSU said it had accepted the latest two-week timeframe despite its reservations, but warned that failure to meet the demands after the deadline could result in industrial action.

The union said such action could disrupt academic activities, including statutory meetings involving its members.

The development comes amid broader concerns from ASUU over unresolved issues affecting university lecturers across Nigeria, including implementation of agreements and outstanding salary-related obligations.

What Students Should Know

For now, Sokoto State University has not been placed on strike. The two-week period is an opportunity for the state government to fulfil its commitments and prevent a disruption of academic activities.

Students are therefore advised to continue with their academic activities normally and monitor official communications from Sokoto State University and ASUU for any subsequent development.
