BREAKING: FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE FREE EDUCATIONAL DATA TO STUDENTS FROM OCTOBER 1

The Federal Government has announced that Nigerian students will begin accessing free daily internet data for approved educational platforms from October 1, 2026.

The initiative, known as the Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content, is being implemented through a collaboration involving the Federal Ministry of Education, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), telecommunications operators and other stakeholders

Students to Get 100MB Daily

Under the initial rollout, about five million eligible students are expected to receive 100MB of zero-rated data every day for accessing approved educational websites and digital learning platforms.

The initiative is initially targeted at students in public senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions, with plans to expand the programme to other categories of learners.

Importantly, the data is intended specifically for approved educational platforms and content rather than unrestricted internet browsing.

What Can Students Use the Data For?

The zero-rated access is expected to cover approved digital education resources, including:

• Learning management systems
• Digital libraries
• Educational repositories
• Teacher-development platforms
• Technical and vocational education platforms
• Other approved digital learning resources

The NCC and the Federal Ministry of Education will determine which platforms qualify for the programme.

N180 Billion Annual Initiative

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the programme represents an estimated ₦180 billion annual zero-rated data initiative, with the initial target of five million learners.

The Federal Government says the intervention is designed to reduce the cost of internet access as a major barrier to digital learning, particularly for students from low-income families and underserved communities.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the official launch of the initiative in Abuja on September 10, 2026.

Students should note that the initiative is not simply a general 100MB free-data giveaway for unrestricted internet use.

The zero-rated allowance is intended for access to approved educational platforms and content under the programme. The exact list of participating platforms, eligibility arrangements and implementation details will therefore be important for students to watch as the October 1 rollout approaches.

The Federal Government says the broader objective is to ensure that the cost of internet connectivity does not prevent Nigerian learners from accessing quality digital educational resources.
